What are
the dates I am required to be available to work throughout
the academic year?
Faculty
members on a 9-month appointment must be available during
Fall, Winter and Spring quarters from registration through
final exams. Faculty members on 12-month appointment must be
available at all times except during vacation and official
university holidays.
Can I be
required to work an overload schedule or to teach a summer
course?
No faculty
member on a 9-month appointment can be required to work
outside the dates of the established academic year (Fall,
Winter, and Spring quarters). In other words, faculty
members on a 9-month appointment cannot be required to teach
or perform other duties from the last official day of the
Spring quarter until the first official day of the Fall
quarter.
With regard
to overload teaching, Article 13 of the AAUP/UC contract
states, “Overload teaching shall be permitted only in
emergency situations.” Deans and academic unit heads are
expected to staff courses as necessary to cover for faculty
members on leave of absence or sabbatical through planned
employment of visiting or adjunct faculty. Preferably,
adjunct faculty should be given at least 65% annual
appointments so as to give them the protections and benefits
of the AAUP/UC contract.
See Article
13 for details on the required minimum pay for overload
teaching.
What does
the contract say about Summer quarter teaching?
The AAUP/UC
contract does not address summer teaching assignment, but
does address pay. Decisions about assignment of summer
teaching are at the discretion of the unit head and/or the
dean.
With regard
to pay, Article 34.4 of the contract specifies that the UC
may not reduce the summer pay schedule. The minimum pay
schedule in effect is that described in the summer school
document of the now-disbanded College of Evening and
Continuing Education.

The AAUP
encourages faculty to work through a shared governance
committee at the unit level to establish written procedures
for summer teaching assignments. It is best if those
procedures are voted on at a meeting of the unit faculty and
subsequently approved by the unit head and/or dean.
