How much
notice must I give if I plan to resign and accept a position
at another institution?
Article
6.2.7 of the AAUP/UC contract states: “A Faculty Member who
accepts an appointment elsewhere shall promptly give notice
to the Dean or administrator. If the resignation is
effective at the end of the academic year, notice should be
given no later than May 15. The Dean or administrator may
waive this requirement for emergencies, and the Faculty
Member should conform to that decision. A Librarian should
give written notice of at least thirty (30) days prior to
leaving the employ of the University. …”
How much
notice must I give the UC that I will be retiring?
Article
18.1 states that 6 months notice of the anticipated date of
retirement should be given to the Dean (or appropriated
administer) and to the University Benefits Division.
Can I
change my mind once I’ve given notice of my planned
retirement?
Within 10
days after receiving the faculty member’s notice of intent
to retire, the Dean or other appropriate administer should
notify you of the benefits available under retirement and
any procedural requirements for completing the process. Once
you have received this notice, you have 30 days to rescind
your intent to retire. After that 30 days, unless you
have rescinded, the retirement date will be effective and
final! (See Article 18.1)
What does
the AAUP contract say about retirement buyout packages?
The current
AAUP/UC contract (ending August 31, 2007) does not contain
any provisions regarding standardized retirement buyout
packages. However, Article 18.5 allows for individual
retirement incentive negotiations between a faculty member
and the Administration.
The AAUP
Chapter Board urges individual faculty members who are
approached to consider such a buyout to examine all options
very carefully. For more details,

newsletter article on this issue.
If I decide
to retire, what happens to my accumulated vacation and sick
leave?
Article
17.13 of the AAUP/UC contract details your options for the
disposition of your accumulated sick leave days at
retirement. Please read this entire article carefully, and
consult with your benefits counselor at the UC Benefits
Office if you have questions.
Per Article
19.3.2, retiring faculty members are paid for all accrued
but unused vacation leave up to 66 days.
If I resign
my position at the UC, what happens to my accumulated
vacation and sick leave?
So long as
you have worked for the UC for at least 1 year, you will be
paid for all accrued but unused vacation leave up to 66 days
(per Article 19.3.2). You will not be compensated for
any unused sick leave days.
What is the
process for granting emeritus status to retired faculty?
The UC
Board of Trustees rules state that the procedure for
granting emeritus status to retired faculty is identical to
the process for hiring new faculty; that is, a committee of
the academic unit’s faculty considers the matter and make a
recommendation to the Dean. That recommendation is then
forwarded to the Provost and the Board of Trustees for final
approval.
