Who’s covered by the AAUP contract with the UC?

The AAUP/UC contract applies to:

1.      All faculty with any of these titles: Professor, Assoc. Professor, Asst. Professor; Instructor; Beginning, Asst., or Assoc. Librarian; Assoc. Senior Librarian and Senior Librarian;

2.      All full-time faculty in the College of Medicine whose salaries are paid directly by the University;

3.      Full-time employees who hold qualified faculty titles (e.g., field service, clinical, research);

4.      Faculty with adjunct or other part-time titles (except in the College of Medicine) who are appointed on an academic or annual year basis at 65% or higher;

5.      Unit heads (except those in the College of Medicine who also head private practice plans), directors, chairpersons, department coordinators, and division heads; and assistants to the Dean employed at 65% or higher.

(See Article 1 of the collective bargaining agreement for more details.)

Am I automatically a member of the AAUP Chapter at the UC?

No. AAUP Chapter members are those who choose to join by filling out a membership form and submit it to the AAUP office. If you’ve been a member of the AAUP at another institution, please contact the office (556-6861 – 450 Dabney Hall) to transfer your membership to this Chapter.

Do I have to join the AAUP Chapter in order to be covered by the contract?

No. But the obvious truth is, the more members the Chapter has, the stronger it is. And the stronger it is, the better able the Chapter is, as a body, to negotiate the best possible contract for all UC faculty. What’s more, along with a strong Faculty Senate, a strong Chapter is an essential part of maintaining a healthy culture of respect and shared governance at any university.

What’s the difference between being a “bargaining unit member” and an “AAUP Chapter member?”

A “bargaining unit member” is a person whose position is classified under the AAUP/UC contract as being protected by the provisions of the contract. (Click here to see a list of titles covered by the AAUP/UC contract.)

An AAUP Chapter member is a faculty member who has chosen to join the Chapter and pays full dues (0.0075 x base UC salary – click here to see a member dues chart). Dues—paying members have full Chapter voting and participation rights.
