What is a “qualified title”?

A qualified title is a term attached to the title of associate professor, assistant professor, or professor. Qualified titles under the AAUP/UC contract are: field service, research, and “of clinical.”

Are faculty with “qualified titles” (field service, research, “of clinical”) covered by the AAUP contract?

If employed full-time, yes. Full-time faculty with these titles have all the same rights under the contract as other faculty, with the exception of tenure eligibility: faculty with qualified titles can apply for reappointment, but not for tenure.

Note that faculty in the College of Medicine who hold a qualified title and who also derive part of their salary from a private practice plan do not have Article 7 rights (i.e., right to reappointment processes). For these faculty, reappointment is controlled by Article 11 – College of Medicine Provisions (see 11.12 and 11.14).

Are adjunct or other contingent faculty covered by the AAUP contract?

If employed at 65% or more of a full-time position; AND, if appointed on at least an academic year or annual basis, then, yes. If employed at 64% or less of a full-time position; OR, if appointed on a quarterly basis, then, no. Represented adjunct faculty are not eligible for tenure, are not eligible for academic leave, and may not serve on RPT committees, but do have all other rights afforded by the contract.

What are my rights to reappointment as a field service, research or clinical faculty member?

Non-tenured faculty (except for clinical faculty in the College of Medicine with qualified titles) have the right to submit a dossier for reappointment according to the timelines and procedures established in Article 7. Recommendations on reappointment at all levels must be based on the criteria established by the faculty member’s academic unit.
