NEW
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR APPOINTED
The UC Chapter AAUP is very pleased to
announce the appointment of Deborah Herman as the new Executive Director.
The search for a new executive director began in May, after the resignation
of James Thompson and resulted in the hiring of Dr. Deborah Herman, PhD.
Debby [as she prefers to be called] comes to
us from the University of Wisconsin at Madison where she has been working
for the Staff, Teaching Assistants’ Association. She has extensive
experience in union work at the University of Wisconsin and at the
University of Iowa where she held both elected and staff positions in the
union representing graduate students. Besides her union experience, Debby
is an academician. She has B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of
Northern Iowa, with a major in Spanish, and a Ph.D. from the University of
Iowa with specialties in Educational Sociology, Foreign Language Education,
and Mexican Border Issues. She has taught at the University of Northern
Iowa, University of Kentucky, University of Iowa, and the University of
Wisconsin – Madison.
Debby will begin in her new position in
early November. In the meantime, past Executive Director Dave Rubin will
continue as interim Director.
Members can meet Debby at the November 10th
Chapter Meeting.
CHAPTER MEETING
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20 @ 12:30 P.M.
The first meeting for
2005-2006 of the UC Chapter AAUP will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2005
beginning at 12:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Faculty Club. Lunch will
be provided to those who RSVP to the AAUP Office at 556-6861 (or via email
at aaupuc1@email.uc.edu) no later than Tuesday, October 18th. The AAUP
extends a special invitation to new Faculty Members regardless of whether or
not they are AAUP members.
This meeting was
originally scheduled for October 13th
but the date was changed when we realized there was a conflict with a
religious holiday. We now understand that the rescheduled meeting conflicts
with an A & S Faculty Meeting and we apologize for the conflict. The rest
of this academic year’s meetings remain as scheduled.
ARTICLE 15
Delays Not Caused by
the AAUP
We have had faculty from a number of
different colleges report that delays in the processing of their Article 15
salary adjustments were due to hold-ups in the AAUP office.
This is not true. The
AAUP is not involved in the approval process for Article 15 adjustments.
Article 15 adjustments (additional
salary increases for purposes of correcting inequities, rewarding
outstanding performance, and matching outside offers – see Collective
Bargaining Agreement) are entirely at the discretion of the Administration.
When Article 15 adjustments are approved, the Administration is required to
give the AAUP 30 days notice before the implementation of the salary
increase. The effective date of any increase is determined by the
Administration.
The AAUP has never (and will never) objected to an Article 15 increase.
